A reflection on empathy, food systems, and planetary interconnectedness

What if community wellness isn’t only about whether individuals are healthy?

What if it is also about the quality of the relationships between us?

Planetary Unity begins with the idea that our lives are interconnected.

Our food connects us to farmers, ecosystems, animals, workers, transportation systems and communities we may never personally encounter.

Our choices ripple outward.

And the circumstances affecting other people eventually affect the communities we share.

This is why compassion belongs in conversations about wellness.

Compassion Is More Than Feeling Sorry for Someone

Compassion can begin with a willingness to recognize another being’s experience.

Instead of asking:

What’s wrong with them?

We might ask:

What might they be experiencing?

Instead of:

Why don’t they simply make better choices?

We might ask:

What choices are actually available to them?

That change in perspective can transform the way we approach community work.

People experiencing difficulty do not need to be reduced to their circumstances.

A person receiving groceries is still someone’s mother, grandfather, teacher, neighbor, artist, dreamer or friend.

Human dignity doesn’t disappear when resources become limited.

Our Food Systems Tell a Story About Our Values

Food provides an especially powerful example of interconnectedness.

Every meal represents relationships.

There is a relationship with the Earth that produced the ingredients.

There are relationships with the people who grew, transported, prepared and distributed them.

And, depending upon what we eat, there may also be relationships with animals whose lives became part of the food system.

Planetary Unity encourages people to examine those relationships with curiosity and compassion.

Plant-based food offers one way to imagine nourishment that considers human health, animals and the environment together.

We do not believe compassion needs to stop at the boundaries of our own species.

If we are capable of expanding the circle of beings whose experiences matter to us, why wouldn’t we?

Wellness Can Be Collective

Individual wellness matters.

But imagine expanding the question from:

How can I become well?

to:

How can we create conditions in which more of us can thrive?

That includes access to nourishing food.

It includes emotional well-being.

It includes belonging.

It includes our treatment of animals.

It includes our relationship with the natural world.

And it includes how we treat one another when nobody is rewarding us for being compassionate.

This is where personal wellness and planetary wellness begin to meet.

A Different Kind of World

Planetary Unity does not begin with the assumption that humanity is hopeless.

Quite the opposite.

We believe human beings possess an extraordinary capacity to reconsider what we have inherited, imagine something different and choose again.

Compassion gives us a place to begin.

Not compassion as weakness.

Compassion as awareness.

Compassion as curiosity.

Compassion as the recognition that another being’s experience matters even when it is different from our own.

Every time we nourish someone, listen without judgment, choose kindness, question an unnecessary harm or recognize ourselves in another living being, we participate in something larger than ourselves.

We practice unity.

And perhaps that is how a new world is created—not all at once, but through millions of decisions that quietly declare:

Your life matters, too.

Together, we create a new world.
